Becoming Someone New: Identity, Evolution, & Self-Trust
How to honor the person you’re becoming without clinging to old versions of yourself
Good morning,
Before you dive in, pause.
Take a gentle breath. Allow your shoulders to soften, releasing the weight of expectations—yours, theirs, everyone's. Let yourself arrive fully into this moment. Are you ready? Are you settled? Wonderful, let’s carry on.
Today, we journey into something tender, transformative, and deeply liberating: honoring the person you're becoming without clinging to past versions of yourself.
Identity is not static—it’s a living, breathing, ever-evolving truth. Yet, supremacy culture teaches us to fear change, equating our natural evolution with inconsistency, weakness, or even betrayal. This culture conditions us to cling tightly to outdated versions of ourselves, planting seeds of fear that embracing growth means losing the love, belonging, or validation we've painstakingly secured.
Supremacy culture demands that we remain within carefully constructed boxes. These boxes aren't built for our comfort or thriving; they're intentionally designed to restrict our movement, growth, and collective imagination. Questioning these imposed identities threatens the foundation upon which oppressive systems depend. It’s why those in power resist diverse identities moving to the forefront. Each time we begin to recognize our identity as something fluid, personal, and evolving, we disrupt the carefully curated control that the ruling class seeks to maintain.
Consider how our identities have been assigned without our consent—labels we inherit and are expected never to question. Allistic. Heteronormative. White. Able-bodied. Christian. These default identities uphold the oppressive hierarchy by dictating what’s "normal," "acceptable," and "valuable." They silently compel us to fit neatly into roles we never consciously chose. When we don’t question these defaults, we unknowingly agree to uphold systems built on exclusion, marginalization, and suppression.
But here is where our liberation begins: in the brave and courageous act of questioning.
When we challenge the identities imposed upon us, we reclaim autonomy and agency. We open doors to radically affirm our complexity, nuance, and multidimensional truth. We begin to name ourselves, to shape our own narratives, to move beyond survival into genuine, vibrant living. Our identities become reclaimed, renewed, and reimagined. They are no longer limitations, but expansive portals into self-discovery, authenticity, and communal transformation.
This questioning is a sacred rebellion. It destabilizes oppressive systems by refusing to remain quietly rooted in nonconsensual identities. It dismantles the illusion that our worth depends upon how closely we adhere to oppressive standards. Instead, we build identities rooted deeply in self-trust, aligned values, and authentic growth. By continuously becoming—by embracing renewal—we collectively refuse to uphold supremacy culture’s oppressive structures.
Ask yourself with gentle curiosity:
Which identities have you accepted without consent or conscious agreement?
What might become possible if you gave yourself permission to question, explore, and redefine your identity on your own terms?
How does embracing identity as fluid and evolving shift your relationship with self-trust, community, and liberation?
Together, let’s courageously step out of the limiting boxes built by supremacy culture. Let’s reclaim the revolutionary act of continuously becoming, expanding our identities with intentionality and care, and honoring who we truly are—freed from externally imposed boundaries.
Because when we honor the person we are becoming, we not only heal ourselves—we radically transform our world.
