Hello all,
For the past 2 years, I have been having fairly regular conversations with Dr. Kimberly Douglass and I’ve shared them over various platforms. As she is taking a much-needed respite whilst curating her next steps in liberation work I am becoming more intentional about making Substack my home and in doing so I am inviting others into this space and having conversations. Today I would like to introduce you all to Dr. Sundiata Soon-Jahta of Sustainable Media Solutions
When I invited Dr. Soon-Jahta to share his journey and wisdom, I did so with my son and other Black boys in mind. My heart yearns for them to hear the voices of those who reflect their potential, their challenges, and their infinite capacity for transformation. But as the conversation unfolded, it became clear that the lessons shared are for everyone walking a liberation journey—Black boys, yes, but also Black girls, nonbinary youth, and every soul seeking to unravel the systems that bind us.
Liberation Begins with Curiosity
Liberation isn’t a destination; it’s a lifelong process of becoming. It begins when we dare to ask questions. Questions that unsettle the comfortable. Questions that challenge the narratives handed to us. Questions that ask, Why? and What if?
Dr. Soon-Jahta’s journey, like mine, is rooted in curiosity. He questioned rigid constructs of masculinity, the narrow paths prescribed by religion, and the oppressive norms of conventional education. In each question, he found an opening—a crack in the systems that confine us. Through those cracks, light poured in.
For those seeking liberation, start with this:
