How Do I Shed the Stories That No Longer Serve Me?
Liberation Lessons: Actionable Advice for Radical Change A Weekly Paid Subscriber Bonus
Dear Liberators,
Spring is a season of shedding—just as the earth releases the last remnants of winter, we too must make space for renewal. But before we can step fully into new growth, we must confront what we are still holding onto.
Many of us carry stories we did not write, narratives imposed upon us by supremacy culture, capitalism, patriarchy, and other systems of oppression. These stories tell us who we should be, what we should want, how we should perform worthiness. They tell us:
You must be productive to deserve rest.
You must be palatable to be accepted.
You must be strong, silent, and self-sacrificing to be worthy.
For too long, we have internalized these scripts, often without realizing it. But they are not ours to carry. We have the right to release them.
Shedding is an intentional practice. It is not always easy. These stories may have once provided a sense of belonging, protection, or survival. But if they are keeping us small, silent, or disconnected from ourselves, they must be named and unlearned.
This week, we ask: What narratives have we outgrown? What do we need to shed in order to step into the fullness of who we are becoming?
The Stories Supremacy Culture Tells Us About Identity & Worth
Capitalism Says: Your worth is measured by productivity. If you are not working, you are failing.
Patriarchy Says: Women and femmes must be accommodating, nurturing, and self-sacrificing. Men must be emotionally suppressed and prove their worth through dominance or financial success.
White Supremacy Says: Marginalized people must prove their humanity over and over again, must be twice as good to get half as much, must stay silent to be "safe."
Colonialism Says: Your cultural identity must be erased, assimilated, or diluted to be acceptable. You must abandon your roots to survive.
Christinization Says: You must suffer to be worthy of love. You must seek external approval rather than inner knowing.
These narratives do not serve us. They limit our potential, force us into survival mode, and disconnect us from liberation. But we have the power to name, challenge, and shed them.
Critical Reflection Questions:
What stories about myself have I been taught that no longer align with my truth?
Where did these narratives come from? Who benefits from me believing them?
What fear arises when I think about releasing these stories?
What new beliefs do I want to cultivate in their place?
