As parents and caregivers, we often feel the weight of wanting to raise children who are compassionate, just, and aware of the world around them. But how do we begin these important conversations about privilege and oppression, especially when they’re so young? It can feel overwhelming to introduce such heavy concepts to little ones while preserving their sense of innocence and joy.
The good news is that kids are often more intuitive and empathetic than we give them credit for. By planting seeds of justice, fairness, and empathy early, we’re giving them a foundation that will grow with them as they navigate the world. However, it’s important to go beyond the typical framing of “privilege” and start introducing the concept of leverage within systems of whiteness.
