Parenting Through the Years: A Journey of Decolonization and Liberation
Building Connection, Healing, and Liberation in Every Stage of Parenting
Introduction: Continuing the Journey of Decolonized Parenting
Last month’s series on decolonizing parenting sparked incredible conversations and powerful feedback from so many of you. It became clear that the work of dismantling colonial legacies in our relationships with our children resonates deeply with parents and caregivers who are on this journey of liberation. Your engagement, reflections, and personal stories have inspired me to continue this conversation, diving even deeper into how decolonized parenting can evolve across all stages of development.
As I reflect on my own experiences, both as a parent navigating these stages and as someone who is constantly learning, unlearning, and healing, I realize just how much of this journey remains untold. Whether you're raising an infant or an adult child, the work of parenting never ends—it shifts, grows, and challenges us to liberate not only our children but ourselves as well.
Parenting Through the Years: Decolonizing at Every Stage of Development is an expansion of our work together. This series will focus on how we can apply decolonized principles of parenting to each stage of a child’s life—from infancy to adulthood. We’ll explore how systems of whiteness and supremacy culture have shaped parenting expectations at every developmental phase, and, more importantly, how we can dismantle those systems to raise liberated, empowered children.
I’ll be sharing both practical insights and reflective tools that you can use in your daily lives, along with my personal journey of healing as I navigate these spaces myself. From consent in early childhood to fostering mutual respect and autonomy in adulthood, this series is designed to help you see how decolonizing your parenting is the foundation for raising emotionally intelligent, self-aware, and liberated individuals.
