Decolonization is a journey back home to self. It is one of (re)discovery, (re)Connection and (re)membering. Todays exercise will guide you on coming back to your inner voice that is quite often silenced based on systems of oppression and supremacy culture.
Objective:
This exercise is designed to strengthen your connection with your inner voice and personal power. It’s especially meaningful for those who have experienced trauma or are in the process of decolonizing their mindset, as it helps to reaffirm agency and self-efficacy.
Duration:
Approximately 20 minutes
Preparation:
Choose a quiet, comfortable space where you feel safe and won't be disturbed.
Sit in a comfortable chair or on the floor, ensuring you feel relaxed and at ease.
If it feels right, light a candle or dim the lights to create a soothing ambiance.
Instructions:
Welcoming Presence:
Begin by acknowledging your presence in the space. Recognize this time as a sacred opportunity to connect with your inner self.
Mindful Breathing:
Close your eyes, if comfortable, and turn your attention to your breathing. Breathe slowly and deeply, focusing on the sensation of air entering and leaving your body.
Body Scan for Agency:
Start a mental scan from the top of your head down to your toes. As you focus on each part of your body, affirm your control and presence in that area. For instance, think, “I am present in my hands,” or “I have agency over my feet.”
Anchor in the Present:
Place your hands on your knees or the ground. Feel the solid support beneath you. Acknowledge that you are here, in the present, and you have power in this moment.
Voice Activation:
Gently hum or make a simple sound (like “ahh” or “mmm”). Feel the vibration in your throat. This exercise helps to activate your throat chakra, which is associated with self-expression and communication.
Visualization of Inner Strength:
Imagine a scene where you feel incredibly strong, powerful, and confident. Visualize the details of this scene – where are you, what are you doing, how do you feel? Bask in these feelings of empowerment.
Affirmations of Self-Efficacy:
Whisper or think affirmations related to your personal strength and power. These can be phrases like “I trust my inner voice,” “I am capable and strong,” or “My voice matters.”
Releasing Doubts:
Visualize any doubts or fears as a grey smoke leaving your body with each exhale. With every inhale, imagine drawing in strength and clarity.
Gratitude and Closure:
Slowly bring your awareness back to the room. Express gratitude to yourself for taking this time to connect with your inner power.
Wiggle your fingers and toes, stretch gently, and when you feel ready, open your eyes.
This exercise is an empowering practice that helps to reaffirm your sense of self and your ability to influence your own life. It’s particularly powerful for those in the process of healing from trauma and decolonizing their experiences, offering a path to reclaim and celebrate their inner voice and power.
