Day 53 of 100 days of community

The Role of Creativity in Reimagining Systems

Supremacy culture thrives on rigidity, hierarchy, and control. It teaches us that the world must be structured in a particular way—one that benefits a select few while restricting the rest of us to systems built on domination, scarcity, and extraction. But what if we refused to accept these structures as the only way forward?

Creativity is not just an art form—it is a tool for liberation. It allows us to imagine something beyond what currently exists, to dream of systems that serve us instead of oppress us. Creativity is what fuels innovation, challenges supremacy culture, and builds communities of imagination where freedom is not just a distant hope, but an active practice.

Today’s conversation explores how creativity plays a vital role in disrupting oppression and reimagining systems that center justice, connection, and sustainability.

This article is part of my 100 Days of Community series, where we engage in liberatory conversations, practical strategies, and deep reflections on what it truly means to build intentional communities.

Supremacy culture teaches us that there is only one "right" way to exist. It devalues imagination because it understands that creative thought leads to resistance. If we are not allowed to dream freely, how can we build something different?

“Supremacy culture consistently disconnects us, right? I tell you that all the time. It’s a disconnection from self, lands, community. It leaves us so... wan. I like the word wan because it’s the prefix in wanting. It is when there is a lack of something. So it leaves us wanting for more because it doesn’t have anything inside of it—no substance, nothing grounding it, nothing holding it together but power. And it’s power over.

Power that’s hoarded. Power over another group in one way or another. Whether it’s white supremacy, able-bodied supremacy, cis supremacy, Christian supremacy—it’s all rooted in hoarding power and having power over someone, not power with. So it’s really difficult to reimagine.

If you can’t become creative, you will replicate and duplicate these systems over and over again. We see that constantly inside all of this work.”

This is why creativity is essential. Without it, we are left with nothing but the same broken systems, slightly rearranged but never truly transformed.
