I can't listen to the whole episode yet because I'm at work, but I wanted to THANK YOU for highlighting the violent colonial myth of Saint Patrick, it is healing work. It's hard for me to explain to folks that the day celebrates the slaughter of my ancestors because it's mostly just a silly day to get drunk, but it still stings something in my soul when folks celebrate.
Every year, EVERY YEAR I bang on about this, feeding into stereotypes, forgotten history. I hate the "Kiss me Im Irish shirts", I hate that everyone is a little Irish on that day all of it. I enjoy the gatherings of course because its community, but I think we should remember, make space for the grief, and then celebrate it like a good ole Irish wake. Let me know what you think when you do have a chance to listen.
