It’s interesting that the full quote re: what doesn’t kill you is “From the military school of life: what does not kill me makes me stronger” (Nietzsche). It’s explicitly linked to violence and obedience
Oooooh, this is tremendously helpful. Taking this all the way in. Our language frames, shapes, and influences us more than we know. Do you happen to have this in video form, where you teach or expound on this vital topic?
Thanks. This kind of thing was/is often said to me by my mother whenever I brought/bring up bad behaviour from male family members. It confused and enraged me and I never understood where it's coming from.
All it taught me was less confidence and that I'm the only one who will protect myself (she won't, I'll need to protect her). I'm happy you named this attitude as not "comfort" (which mind-bogglingly she seems to intend it as?!?!?) but clearly as discipline.
Under the well-meaning layer, that's unfortunately exactly what it is.
Love how you said “everything happens for a reason “ spiritualizes harm. All of these have been spoken to me especially as a youth cause I always questioned stuff and was met with these cliches. Tbh I’ve said some of them lately , especially “ageee to disagree “

I absolutely LOVE your enthusiasm here. I just posted our podcast form this morning, so that answer is a resounding YES! https://open.substack.com/pub/desireebstephens/p/why-it-is-what-it-is-isnt-liberation?r=2v5h8f&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

Thought this might resonate - this is from Scroll 19 of my project The Hidden Clinic. I wrote it as a prayer—not a statement. Not for applause. Just rhythm for witness. https://thehiddenclinic.substack.com/p/to-the-ones-who-were-set-on-fire
