I can’t always attend as the sessions are at 11.30pm for me, but I wanted to share my experience as a person who has grown up in another oppressive culture. I am Indian, and the traditions and customs that Hindu’s perform are very misogynistic and sexist. But the philosophy of Hinduism isn’t one of power over. Even our goddesses are seen as equals to the gods. So it’s more how ppl enact the beliefs that is problematic, (just like Christianity). How we are very different to Christians, is that we never used our belief system to invade, colonise and deny other humans basic rights just because they had different coloured skin. We didn’t globalise and profit off the harm of other humans, nor did we ever force our beliefs on others humans to follow. So although you can argue that other ‘religions’ (I used inverted commas because Hinduism isn’t a religion, it’s a way of living life. It was white ppl who call it a religion for simplicity sake when talking about faiths) are just as oppressive as Christianity, it is most certainly not true.
I just wanted to add that the caste system in our culture is very similar to the class system in whiteness. This was what allowed the wealthy powerful Brahmins to align with the British aristocracy during colonialism to reinforce these divisions that we still see today.
Well done! There are 50 eleven thought terminating cliches that undermine conversation.
"you'll get over it"
"you can't legislate morality"
there's no manual for raising kids"
"I can't do anything about that"
"It won't get better until Jesus comes"
